The National Gallery
of Modern Art in Delhi
Opening up to a NewWorld
Nandu Manjeshwar
The National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi
(NGMA) is a veritable treasure house of Indian
contemporary art. Housed in a royal palace
since its inception, its display space was severely
restricted. Today, however, the situation is
different. A new wing – which is truly modern in
every sense of the word – has been created. The
NGMA, within striking distance of the historic
Творба на Бхупен Кхаккар India Gate, has a collection of 30,000 modern and
contemporary art, both canvas and sculptures.
NGMA is a repository of some of the priceless
exhibits and perhaps the biggest in this region.
The new wing is an architectural beauty,
with easy accessibility to the priceless art on
display. Natural illumination in the gallery spaces
is supplemented by an “intelligent“ artificial
illumination system. The paintings are displayed
on a system of movable modular walls. Over a
thousand architectural, structural and services
drawings were created to be able to build this vast
and complex project. The general perception of
the visitors has been extremely positive.
