Situated in the northwest of the country,
Rajasthan is the largest by territory state of the
Republic of India. It encompasses most of the
territory of the Thar desert and also one of the
world’s oldest mountain ranges, the Aravali,
which cradles Mount Abu, the only hill station
in Rajasthan, famous for the Dilwara temples,
a sacred piligrimage site for Jains. The capital
of the state – Jaipur – was founded in 1727 and
at that time was one of the most well-ordered
cities not only in India. The so called Pink city
has a lot to offer with its large number of palaces,
forts , temples and colorful markets. Rajasthan
is home of the so called „Venice of the East“ -
the city of Udaipur, also known as „The City of
Lakes“. The “blue“ city Jodhpur, the ancient Ajmer
and Pushkar and “sand“ city Jaisalmer can only
confirm the idea of colour and variety of the state.
Rajasthan hosts also the Keoladeo National Park -
a bird sanctuary, which is a World Heritage Site, as
well as two tiger reserves – those of Ranthambore
and Sariska. Its well-preserved and abundant
heritage in folk music, the ghoomar dance of
Udaipur, the kalbeliya dance of Jaisalmer, the blue
pottery, the colorful and detailed embroidery and
the wooden puppets are just a small part of the
gifts this traditionally rich state can offer.
